Modern design surfboard blanks are made from two materials of foam. They are PU polyurethane and EPS polystyrene. Current most boards are made of PU foam blanks and laminated by Polyester resin.

After shaping the foam blank, it’s laminated/glassing. This process uses resin and e-glass fiberglass fabric to seal the foam board and improve the tensile strength. Modern surfboards are laminated with 4 ounce and 6 ounce fiberglass cloth. The resins can be polyester resin without the addition of sanding solution and epoxy resin.

Then,prepare the fiberglass cloth: lay the fabric over the foam. Then resin is applied with a squeegee to evenly distribute and saturate the resin in the e-glass cloth. The process should be repeated on the bottom too. And warp the rails of surfboard and blend the cloth over each side. Once the board is laminated and the fin plugs are put in, sanded or gloss finishing should be done to make the surfboard appears better.

Laminating Fiberglass Cloth

4oz 6522 e-glass fiberglass fabric is a light weight, fire resistant and high tensile strength woven cloth. It is flexible so that easy to fabricate and apply to the board deck. 4oz, 6oz and 8oz are standard weight for surfboard glassing (laminating). These economical fabrics with durability can improve the surfboard in high tensile trength but low weight.

When using the fiberglass cloth for glassing, almost all stock standard shortboards are used two layers of 4oz glass on the deck, and one layer on the bottom (4+4×4). And for team boards is 4×4 or 4+4(3/4 patch) x4, for strong glass job: 4+6×6, for standard malibu glass job: 6+6×6. 4oz 27.5 inches width are suitable for shortboard. Our standard roll length is 100 meters.
